Founded in 1986 in New Jersey (my home state!) as the National Interfaith Hospitality Network (NIHN), FamilyPromise was a charity born out of empathy and a sincere desire for change. Karen Olsen started the network after a chance conversation with a woman she’d met on the way to a business meeting who was experiencing homelessness. That one conversation sparked the creation of FamilyPromise as it exists today; with ~460 employees and over 200,000 volunteers working together within communities across the US to utilize existing resources to shelter, serve and stabilize those in need.
Homelessness increased 18% from 2023 to 2024 alone.
The affordability crisis is cited as the highest contributing factor to the growing homelessness epidemic in the US. FamilyPromise combats this issue, providing emergency housing and working with families to address other needs such as food, housing/job search assistance, and prevention services. 88% of families secure housing within 9 weeks of joining the program. Though the organization has already helped over 1 million people since its founding, the current chief goal is to transform the lives of 1 million children by 2030.
